The North Charleston Police Department's K9
Division was established in October 1979 and has since grown to a size of
7 highly trained dual purpose police dogs. North Charleston is the fastest
growing city in South Carolina and contains the largest retail
population in South Carolina. Our police dogs are all proficient
in odor detection, tracking and criminal apprehension. The K9
Division primarily supports NCPD's patrol division, however, our dogs
are frequently called to participate in special operations including:
high risk warrant service, narcotics operations, port security,
operations in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security,
dignitary protection, interdiction operations and any other situation
where a police dog would assist in officer and public safety while
apprehending dangerous criminals, locating explosives or locating
illicit drugs. The team currently consists of 4 Narcotic/Patrol
dogs and 3 Explosive/Patrol dogs. Each dog and their handler has
completed a rigorous and thorough training program.
|
|
|
| Each K9 and their handler trains a minimum of
16 hours each month, however this standard is routinely far
exceeded to maintain the high performance standard set
forth. Our dogs are certified with the South Carolina
Police K9 Association and we strive to stay
ahead of these rigorous standards. The team has also
trained with the Royal Dutch Police Hondergeliders and members
of the KNPV.
When not on duty, NCPD's police dogs enjoy
their time living with their handlers. Many times the K9s
go on vacation with their handlers and families. They also
enjoy activities with their handlers such as camping, fishing,
boating, going for walks, playing ball and other normal
"fun" stuff for dogs. |
 |
 |
Each K9 is assigned his own patrol
car with is lettered with the K9's name. The cars are outfitted
with a special kennel in the back to keep the dogs safe and
comfortable. The Patrol Cars are equipped with a special system that constantly monitors the vehicle's interior
temperature. Should the temperature become too hot, the
system activates the vehicle's horn and lights, rolls the back
windows down while sending a message to the handler's pager of the
dangerous temperature. Should the officer quickly need the dog's
assistance, he can deploy the dog from the car remotely by
pressing a button on his gun belt. |
Our unit frequently participates in
demonstrations to the public. If your school, church or
civic organization is interested in finding out how to set up a
demonstration with the NCPD K9 team please feel free to contact
us through the information below. Please visit our What's'
Happening Page to find out information on upcoming
demonstrations, statistics and accomplishments from our dogs.
